Sean
Murphy (St Brendan's)
Left
corner back
The
man better known as “Shapes “ has been a
complete revelation this year for the Brendan's.
After breaking into the team last year he was
regarded by many as a “weak link”,
however, a string of tough, uncompromising
displays for the club in the run to the
All-Ireland quarterfinal showdown with
Crossmolina proved that Dubliner Murphy was
anything but a weak link. 2003 has seen his
performances rise to a new level and was
undoubtedly the Brendan's best defender this
year.
The
strange thing about Sean is that he didn’t
start to play GAA seriously until about 18
months ago, as prior to that he focused more
on soccer.
A
former student at Strawberry Hill, Sean now
works as a fitness instructor.
Colin
McCaul (St Brendan's)
Midfield.
The
big man from Magheracloone, Co Monaghan
arrived in London on the back of a man of the
match performance in the Monaghan senior
championship final in 2002. A regular on the
Monaghan county team for a number of years,
his arrival in London was seen as a great
acquisition for the St Brendan's and
throughout the year he has performed admirably
for the team.
A
strong powerful midfielder who, despite not
being the tallest of men, is comfortable in
the air, has done much to cement his
reputation as a competitive performer.
Colin
has recently finished his PGCE course and has
taken up a teaching post in East London.
Shane
Manley (St Brendan's)
Centre
half forward.
They
say that when it really matters the cream will
always rise to the top and certainly from that
point in the championship, midway through the
game against the Parnells, when the
Brendan’s survival in the competition came
under scrutiny, Offaly man Shane Manley proved
exactly why he is held in such high esteem by
his team mates.
In
the second half against the Parnells and again
in the games against Jersey Irish and Neasden
Gaels, Manley proved that he is a player of
the very highest calibre indeed.
Now
in his second spell in London, he graduated
from Strawberry Hill in 1998, Manley is once
more showing the sort of form that made him a
member of Tommy Lyons’ Offaly panel in the
mid-1990’s.
Manley,
from the Shamrocks club in the Faithful
County, is a natural born leader, has also
played in Australia where he was a member of
the New South Wales team that played the
travelling Irish selection in 1999.
Shane
Manley was one of only two players to hold on
to an All Star. Pat Rafter of Tara being the
other although in 2003 Shane's was at centre
half forward and in 2004 at full
forward.
The
All-Stars team for 2004 is as follows.
- Shaun
Howard (KKG)
- Andrew
Murphy (KKG)
- Damien
McKenna (Tara)
- Martin
Murtagh (Tara)
- Paddy
McConigley (Tir Chonnail Gaels)
- Pat
Rafter (Tara)
- Conor
Mone (Tara)
- Paddy
Quinn (St Claret's)
- Martin
Drea (Garryowen)
- Philip
Morgan (St Kiernan's)
- Pat
Quirke (Moindearg)
- Trent
Fitzpatrick ( Harlesden Harps)
- John
McGuiness (Tara)
- Shane
Manley (St Brendan's)
- Scott
Doran (Neasden Gaels)
St
Brendan's had 6 players nominated (including
Paul Tierney - Tyrone - Corner Back). Five
players were selected on the London All Stars
Team for 2005:
Billy
Molloy (Wexford) - Goalkeeper
Aidan
McLernon (Antrim) - Corner Back
Shane
McAnarney (Meath) - Midfield
Shane
Manley (Offaly) - Full Forward
Adrian

Shane
Manley is the only player to receive an All
Star for every year since the scheme was first
introduced in London. Well done to Shane and
all the players for their deserving
awards.
For
