LONDON SFC
2004
Classy
show from Brendans
By
John Collins (Irish World)
St
Brendans 3-14
St
Kiernans 1-5
In
the first twenty minutes of this game St
Kiernans failed to score. In the last twenty
minutes of the game St Brendans failed to
score either. Yet and all, the men in green
and white won the game by a ridiculously
comfortable margin of fifteen points.
During
that opening twenty minutes, when the Kiernans
were unable to score, Shane Manley reigned
supreme for the 2002 Champions. The full
forward scored
two goals and a point in that time and
set up this easy victory for his team.
Just
before half time corner back Sean Murphy burst
though from midfield to bury the ball past
Laurence O’Leary in the Kiernans goal for
the Brendans third major of the day and
leave his team eighteen points ahead at
the turn around.
Which
interval team talk was the more difficult to
deliver was the issue at the break?
St
Kiernans would have focused heavily on pride
whilst the Brendans would surely have looked
more deeply at performance.
If
results of the second half are anything to go
by, then the
St Kiernans’ chat was a great deal more
effective.
St
Brendans chopped and changed the team about to
allow fringe players a taste of the action,
while St Kiernans , minus several of the older
campaigners, turned to young Philip Morgan for
a little inspiration and he duly delivered
with an overall tally of
1-4.
However,
the result was never in any doubt and really
with the Brendans turning on the sort of style
they showed here, it is difficult to imagine
that they will not be the team to beat this
year.
