London Football :

Best of luck to Barry Solan, John McKevitt, Shane McInerney, Dannie O’Connor and Aidan McLernon in the All-Ireland Qualifiers. Our three lads who started against Roscommon really gave a great display particularly Barry with his free kicks. Let’s hope that they can build on this performance and show that they have what it takes to beat whoever they meet next. A mention should also go to Niall Barry & Cathal Smyth who have been acting as physios for London throughout the year.

Best wishes also go to Niall Clinton and Sean McAlinden who are playing for the London Junior team which has successfully negotiated its way to the British Junior final against Lancashire.

MAY NEWS:

Rumour has it!

With the Reserve league having just kicked off in the last week, an interesting story was recently told about our Chairman and the ‘ruthless’ recruitment policy that he employed in the mid 90’s. Allegedly, Paddy had, among his fairly ‘sizeable’ workforce a man called Jack O’ Hearne who was also, coincidently, a Parnells man and their Reserve manager at that.

Now, apparently, as the season drew to a close (which incidently coincided with the start of a new academic year at Strawberry Hill College) the St.Brendan’s Reserve team had reached the Championship final and they were to meet Parnells in the final. On the particular Saturday of the final, Paddy apparently was working his Parnells employee ‘to the bone’ and Paddy himself was planning to shoot off early so that he would have time to get down to Strawberry Hill and pick up a load (or possibly two) of students to supplement his somewhat depleted Reserve squad. As it turned out, Paddy was late getting away from the job, no thanks to the Parnells man making an excuse about having to M.O.T. his car and heading off home early. Allegedly, Paddy jumped into his infamous Ford Granada with the boot filled to the brim with spare boots, odd socks, jerseys, various gloves, tracksuit tops and the odd gum shield to cater for the various student needs, and sped down the Hayes by-pass to Twickenham. (Paddy knew about differentiation before any of us in education knew about it.)

On getting to the college, Paddy was delighted and relieved to see that his highly selected bunch of new recruits were all waiting for him as he had arranged. Paddy’s intelligence gathering was such that he was confident that he was securing the services of the best footballers available in the college. Following a bit of banter and few checks that everyone had their ID cards to prove that they were all legal, the oul Granada was loaded up and Paddy proceeded out the gate. Now, just as they are about to edge out of the college entrance, and Paddy has already had to tell ‘Pocket’s’ to stop farting, who does Paddy meet driving in through the College gate, but only ‘yer man’ from the Parnells, the bold Jack O’. It suddenly dawned on Paddy that the reason Jack O’ had left the job early was because he had the same idea as Paddy i.e. to get down and pick up a few students for the Parnells. Without a moment’s thought, Paddy simply rolled down the window and shouted over to Jack O’, ‘Hi Jack O’, you can have what I have left!’, before speeding off amid howls of laughter and pleadings for ‘Pockets’ to be thrown out for stinking the car out

Final score:

Parnells (1-10)

St.Brendans (1-11) (Pockets scored the winner!)
