Reserve League Round 1 2005

Reserve League Match Report

St.Brendan’s (1-8)

Tir Chonaill Gaels (0-10)

St.Brendan’s had a one point victory over Tir Chonaill Gaels in the first round of the Reserve League on Wednesday night in Ruislip. With both teams fielding very experienced line-ups, the game was almost a throw back to the senior championship meetings of 2000 and 2001. Amongst the ‘Gaels’ team were veterans Stevie Keane, Barry McDonagh, Andy Carr, Maurice Carr and Damien Gillespie whilst St.Brendan’s took to the field with Colin McCarthy, Niall Barry and Johnny McNabb in their ranks. The game started off with points being traded by Ger Melia of St.Brendan’s and a pointed free from Damien Gillespie before the St.Brendan’s full forward Enda Trench hit a goal having continued his run to receive a knock down from Brian McIntyre on the edge of the small square. Trench added a pointed free immediately after this before the Gaels themselves came back with pointed points from Gillespie as well as one from play. Both Gillespie and McNabb were having a good old ding dong battle in the corner as they reacquainted themselves for the first time in three years.  St.Brendan’s added further points from Enda Trench and Dave O’Riordan before Tir Chonaill Gaels finished the half with points from JP O’Donnell and Maurice Carr.

Half Time: St.Brendan’s 1-4 Tir Chonaill Gaels 0-6

The second half began with St.Brendan’s on the attack and their lead was stretched through points from Niall Barry and Enda Trench before the Tir Chonaill men found their range with points from the hardworking Seamus McGlynn and Damien Gillespie. A Pauric Mitchell point along with another Trench point increased St.Brendan’s lead and although Tir Chonaill Gaels kicked over a couple of late points to leave just one point in it, the men in Green and White held on for a notable victory. Best for St.Brendan’s on the night were top scorer Enda Trench, Colin McCarthy who was playing his first game in three years, Johnny McNabb, Ger Melia and Cathal Smyth whilst the more prominent players for Tir Chonaill Gaels were Seamus McGlynn, Damien Gillespie, Barry McDonagh and JP O’Donnell.
