Challenge Match 21/3/2010
St Brendans..........1-7
Tara......................1-12
St.Brendan’s opened their 2010 season with a challenge match against Tara’s at Greenford on Sunday.
In dry and favourable conditions for football, Brendan’s took the lead after three minutes, when Sean Og Laverty pointed. This was followed by a Jarlath Harte free following a foul on the fore mentioned Laverty. Harte then double his account with a fine strike from the sideline to put Brendan’s on top by 3 points with thirteen minutes played.
Tara’s responded well but lacked composure in front of the posts to reward their efforts. Further scores from Michael Cocoman and a brace from Cathal Donohue gave Brendan’s a half time lead of six points to no score.
However, injuries to Dave O'Riordan and Michael Cocoman coupled with an improved Tara’s effort saw Brendan’s advantage dismissed after ten second half minutes.
With the breeze to their advantage, Tara’s found scores through Paul McDermott (0-4) and county panellist, Enda Gallagher (0-3). Rory Cullen then produced a sharp low save to deny McDermott, but could not deny Gerry Keegan’s precise finish via the base of the left hand post.
Gallagher with his fourth point continued Tara’s second half dominance before Brendan’s responded a point from Donohue and a fine goal from Laverty.
However, Tara’s main score threats finished off the match with McDermott and Gallagher scoring (0-2) and (0-1) respectively. Considering this was the first outing of the 2010 season, the football on show was positive with good interaction between a Brendan’s team that hasn’t played for some time. It was also an opportunity to welcome Sean Og and Micheal to the team.
