Conway Cup Quarter Final 18/5/2010

St Brendans..........0-6

TCG.................0-12

It had been a couple of weeks since the senior team had a match so this game against TCG came with much anticipation. Much was said about the new rules changes, significantly around the hand pass, but it was discipline which was at the fore front of the referee’s mind as a number of players were booked for dissent. Scores were exchanged throughout the first half. Brendan’s showed good control while in position and manufactured some early scores from Simon Cullen and Sean Og Lavery. The Gaels found it difficult to get going after there trip to Donegal, but responded to much that the Brendan’s produced. Further scores by Paddy Bowles and Joe Cush gave St.Brendan’s a half time advantage. Before the whistle though, Cush suffered a knee injury which ruled him out for the rest of the match.

HT: St Brendan’s 0-5 TCG 0-4

The half time break gave the Gaels time to adjust their team, when they opted to go with a two man full forward line and drop the half forward line deep to prevent St.Brendan’s running game. This tactic ultimately proved decisive as a number of Brendan’s moves broke down and TCG broke at will to knock over the scores which brought them to victory. Another injury, this time to Tony Sweeney did not help the Brendan’s cause as they battled to the end.

It was overall disappointing for the Brendan’s, as the recent training lead to good possession and play. However poor decision making at times on the ball coupled with poor discipline and work rate when not in possession lead to the match slipping away.
